Day Trips from Sitges: 7 Best Destinations
Best day trips from Sitges: Barcelona (40min by train), Montserrat, Penedès wineries and Roman Tarragona. Perfect base for exploring.
Sitges is not just a destination — it's the perfect hub for exploring the best of Catalonia. Within a 60 km radius you'll find cosmopolitan Barcelona, the Benedictine monastery of Montserrat, the cava wineries of the Penedès and Roman Tarragona, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. All accessible by train, car or e-bike. Here are the 7 best day trips from Sitges, ordered by distance.
Barcelona from Sitges: 40 Minutes by Train
The easiest and most popular excursion. The R2 Sud Rodalies train connects Sitges with Barcelona Sants in just 40 minutes for €4.60 per journey. Trains run every 20-30 minutes.
You can arrive in Barcelona first thing in the morning and spend the whole day before returning on the evening train. The essentials in a day:
- El Born: Barcelona's coolest neighbourhood with the Mercat de Santa Caterina, Palau de la Música and Parc de la Ciutadella. 15 minutes on foot from Barcelona Sants.
- Barceloneta: Barcelona's urban beach, with promenade restaurants and the Barceloneta Market. 30 minutes on foot from El Born.
- Sagrada Família: Gaudí's masterpiece. Book online in advance.
- Park Güell: Gaudí's mosaic terraces with the best views of the city. Online booking required.
Half-day option: El Born + Barceloneta requires no public transport and covers the best of the city.
Montserrat from Sitges: A Full Day
The most spectacular excursion. Montserrat is the 9th-century Benedictine monastery perched on a unique rocky formation at 1,200 metres altitude, about 65 km from Sitges (1h15 by car via the C-32 and A-2).
By public transport from Sitges: R2 Sud train to Barcelona Sants (40min), change to FGC line R5 to Monistrol de Montserrat or Aeri de Montserrat (1h), then cable car or rack railway to the monastery. Total: about 2 hours from Sitges to Montserrat.
What to see at Montserrat:
- La Moreneta: the 12th-century Black Virgin, patron of Catalonia. Queue: 30-45 minutes to see her up close.
- Museu de Montserrat: important art collection with works by Caravaggio, El Greco, Picasso and Dalí.
- Hiking trails: the Camí de Sant Joan path (45 min one way) offers 360° views of Catalonia, the Pyrenees and — on very clear days — the Balearic Islands.
- Els Escolans: Montserrat's boys' choir, the oldest in Europe (13th century). They sing at 13:00 Monday to Friday.
Perfect combination: Montserrat + 2 hours in El Born on the same day.
Penedès Wineries: Wine and Cava
The perfect excursion for wine lovers. The D.O. Penedès is Catalonia's most important wine region and is just 20-30 minutes by car from Sitges (or 30-40 minutes by train to Vilafranca del Penedès or Sant Sadurní d'Anoia).
Top wineries to visit:
- Bodegas Torres (Vilafranca del Penedès): Spain's most internationally awarded winery. Tours with tasting from €15. Open year-round.
- Freixenet (Sant Sadurní d'Anoia): the world's most famous cava winery. Guided tours of the underground caves with tasting. Book online.
- Codorníu (Sant Sadurní d'Anoia): modernist winery with Puig i Cadafalch's building declared a National Monument. The tour includes Spain's longest cellars (30 km of galleries).
The cava route between Sant Sadurní and Vilafranca by bicycle (12 km) is well signposted and passes 6-8 wineries. Bike hire in Sant Sadurní from €20.

Tarragona: Catalonia's Roman City
The historical excursion par excellence. Tarragona is the ancient Roman capital of Hispania Citerior, 45 minutes by train from Sitges (R2 Sud line, €4.60-8). Its archaeological ensemble has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.
What to see in Tarragona in a day:
- Roman Amphitheatre: 2nd-century AD arena directly above the Mediterranean Sea. Spectacular to photograph at sunrise.
- Passeig Arqueològic: Roman walls from the 2nd century BC with panoramic views.
- MNAT (National Archaeological Museum): Spain's most important collection of Roman mosaics.
- Rambla Nova: the commercial boulevard with its terrace overlooking the sea.
- Cathedral: 12th-century Gothic, built on the ancient Roman forum.
Tip: arrive in Tarragona on the first morning train (~8:00) to see the amphitheatre without tourists in golden Mediterranean light.
More Options: Garraf, Vilanova, Castelldefels
Half-day excursions within 30 minutes of Sitges:
Parc Natural del Garraf — 10 minutes by bike from Sitges. Trails through kermes oak and Mediterranean pine, with sea viewpoints. Free entry, open year-round.
Vilanova i la Geltrú — 15 minutes by train. Active fishing port, wider beaches than Sitges, the Víctor Balaguer Museum (19th-century Catalan art) and the best fish market in the Garraf region. The harbour promenade at vermouth hour (12:00-14:00) is an authentic experience.
Castelldefels — 20 minutes by train. Castelldefels beach stretches 5 km of continuous sand, much wider than any Sitges beach. Ideal for windsurfing, kitesurfing and families wanting plenty of space.
