Sitges with kids: beaches, activities and practical tips
Family guide to Sitges: the best child-friendly beaches, activities for all ages, how to get there without a car, and when to visit to avoid the August crowds.
Sitges has an advantage few Catalan coastal towns can match: it is compact, safe and the sea is a short walk from anywhere in the centre. For families with children, that changes everything. No cars cutting across the promenade, beaches graded by difficulty depending on age, and a tapas food culture that works for the whole family.
Why Sitges works well with children
Sitges's historic centre is small and largely car-free. The Passeig de la Ribera — the main seafront promenade — runs between the town and the sea without heavy traffic. Children have room to move freely without the chaos of larger resorts.
Restaurants with set menus, ice cream parlours and tapas bars make eating out with children straightforward. And the train station is a ten-minute walk from the centre, which means arriving from Barcelona without a car and without traffic jams.
The best beaches for families
Aiguadolç Beach
The top recommendation for young children. The water comes in very gradually, almost no surf, protected naturally by the marina. The sand is clean and there are lifeguards in season. Right next to it is the marina, where children can watch boats up close — endlessly entertaining for the under-fives.
La Ribera Beach
The main beach and the longest in Sitges. Wide sand, well equipped with showers and sunbed hire, easy access from the promenade. The waves are moderate — suitable for children aged 4–5 and up with supervision. In July and August it gets very crowded; May, June and September are a different experience entirely.
Sant Sebastià Beach
Slightly quieter than La Ribera, at the other end of the promenade. A good option for a more relaxed afternoon. Well-defined sandy area and less crowded even in high season.
Activities for children in Sitges
Passeig de la Ribera
The seafront promenade is the hub of life in Sitges. With children it works especially well in the early morning or at dusk: ice cream in hand, a rented bicycle or simply walking with the sea in view. In summer, chiringuito beach bars have wide terraces where children do not need to sit still.
Sitges Carnival
If your visit coincides with Carnival (February), the experience for children is hard to beat. The costume parades are spectacular, colourful and very participatory. The atmosphere is festive and entirely family-friendly during the daytime rúas. Arrive early to get a front-row spot.
Aiguadolç Marina
Children are usually fascinated by the marina: boats of all sizes, seagulls and constant movement of vessels. It is a short walk from the centre and there are several restaurants with terraces where you can stop for a rest.
Museu del Cinema in Vilanova
About 15 minutes by train from Sitges, in Vilanova i la Geltrú, the Museu del Cinema is a good excursion for children aged 7 and up. Optical illusions, magic lanterns and the origins of cinema — more hands-on than it sounds.
Food: eating out with children in Sitges
The tapas culture is ideal for children: small portions, variety, no pressure to finish a whole plate. The classics that tend to go down well are croquetes, pan amb tomàquet (bread rubbed with tomato), anchovies and fried squid. Most restaurants in the centre offer a lunchtime set menu with straightforward options.
For dessert, several artisan ice cream shops line the Passeig de la Ribera. Horchata — a cold tiger nut drink — is also easy to find in season and children almost always love it.
Tapa a Tapa route with children
The Tapa a Tapa route — 40 tapas at €2.50 each across 40 different restaurants — works surprisingly well with children. The dynamic of walking from bar to bar trying a different tapa each time turns eating into something closer to a game. Curious children genuinely enjoy it. The event runs from 24 April to 10 May, which is one of the best times of year to visit with family.
Accommodation for families
The Aiguadolç area and the southern part of Sitges is the best option for families: quieter, easier parking if you drive, and three minutes from the most child-friendly beach. Some hotels in the area have their own pool — useful on days when the beach is packed.
The historic centre also works if the children are older — livelier atmosphere, equally good logistics. Full details in the where to stay in Sitges guide.
Getting there from Barcelona
The R2 Sud train from Barcelona Sants reaches Sitges in around 40 minutes. It is the most comfortable option with children: no traffic, no parking headache and direct access to the centre from the station. Children under 4 travel free; ages 4 to 12 have a reduced fare.
Once in Sitges, everything relevant for families is walkable. A car inside the town adds nothing — it mostly complicates things. All the details are in the how to get to Sitges guide.
When to visit with children
| Period | Family rating |
|---|---|
| May–June | Excellent: good weather, uncrowded beaches, Tapa a Tapa in May |
| July–August | Intense heat, very crowded beaches — manageable but more tiring |
| September | Very good: warm water, calmer atmosphere |
| Carnival (February) | Spectacular for children, but too cold for the beach |
| Easter | Decent, can be quite busy |
May and June are probably the sweet spot for a family trip: pleasant temperatures, beaches that are not yet packed, and the chance to catch the food route in action.
