Barcelona to Sitges: trains, driving and all your options
Practical guide to getting from Barcelona to Sitges: R2 Sud train from Sants (40 min, ~€4), driving via C-32 (35 km), direct connection from Terminal T2 airport and tips for each option.
Sitges is 35 kilometres from Barcelona. That distance takes 40 minutes by train, 35 minutes by car with clear traffic — or two hours by car on a Sunday in August. The difference between an easy day trip and a stressful one almost always comes down to how you get there.
Train: the easiest option (and the most recommended)
The R2 Sud regional train runs non-stop from Barcelona to Sitges. No traffic, no parking stress, frequent enough that you don't need to plan around a specific departure.
Where to board
The R2 Sud stops at several Barcelona stations:
- Barcelona Sants — the most common departure point from the city centre
- Passeig de Gràcia — ideal if you're staying in the Eixample
- Barcelona Clot-Aragó — for those arriving from the north
- El Prat T2 — direct connection from the airport with no transfer
Sitges is the seventh stop from Sants: approximately 40 minutes.
Schedule and frequency
Service runs from around 05:00 to past midnight. On weekdays during peak hours, trains run every 20 minutes. On weekends and public holidays, frequency can drop to every 30 minutes.
During major events — Carnival, Tapa a Tapa route — Renfe typically adds late-night trains. Always check the last return train at rodalies.gencat.cat before you go.
Price
A single Barcelona–Sitges ticket costs approximately €4 using the T-Casual card integrated into the Barcelona Metropolitan Area fare system. If you already have a Barcelona transport pass (T-Usual, T-Jove), it may cover the journey depending on the zones included.
From Barcelona Airport
If you land at Terminal T2, the R2 Sud goes directly to Sitges in about 35 minutes with no transfer — one of the most convenient airport-to-resort connections on the Catalan coast.
From Terminal T1, you'll need the free shuttle bus to T2 first, adding about 15 minutes to the journey.
Car: quick if the traffic cooperates
In normal conditions, driving takes about 35 minutes from central Barcelona to Sitges via the C-32 motorway (toll road) from the Ronda de Dalt ring road.
Toll
The C-32 charges a toll. Barcelona–Sitges costs approximately €3–4 by car. The alternative coastal road (C-31) is toll-free but significantly slower in high season.
Parking in Sitges
This is the real problem with driving: parking in Sitges on weekends or during high season is scarce and expensive.
- Historic centre: paid blue zone, very limited spaces
- Parking L'Estació: largest car park, best located near the beach
- Peripheral free zones: 10–15 minutes' walk from the old town
In summer and during events like Carnival or the Tapa a Tapa route, paid car parks fill before noon. Bottom line: the train wins on any weekend from May to September. Driving only makes sense off-season or for groups of four with luggage.
Bus: the slower option
Monbus operates a coach service between Barcelona and Sitges. Less frequent than the train and slower (45–60 minutes depending on stops), but useful if your starting or ending point is close to one of its stops.
Not recommended for day trips when timing matters.
Taxi or ride-hailing from the airport
A taxi or app-based service from Barcelona Airport to Sitges costs between €60 and €80 depending on the time and provider. The most expensive option by far — only justified with heavy luggage, late-night arrivals, or when the train isn't running.
