Best beaches in Sitges: which one to choose
Practical guide to the best beaches in Sitges: La Ribera, Sant Sebastià, nudist beaches, gay-friendly, quiet coves and Blue Flag. Which beach suits your plans.
Sitges has 17 beaches along 22 kilometres of Mediterranean coastline. The question isn't whether there's a good beach — there always is — but which one fits what you're looking for. A quiet spot to read is not the same as the best option on a Saturday in August with a group of friends.
Playa de la Ribera — the main beach
The longest beach in Sitges (almost a kilometre) and the most central. It runs alongside the Passeig de la Ribera, lined with bars, restaurants and terraces. Fine sand, calm water and plenty of life.
Best for: first-time visitors, atmosphere, families with young children. Downside: in summer it fills up before 11am. Arrive early or pick an alternative. Facilities: lifeguards, showers, sun lounger and umbrella hire, accessible access.
Playa de Sant Sebastià — next to the old town
Immediately north of the promenade, separated from la Ribera by the marina. Smaller and slightly quieter. Ideal if you want to combine beach time with a walk through the historic centre.
Best for: mixing beach with a visit to the old town. Access: from the church of Sant Bartomeu, walk down any street towards the sea. 5 minutes from the train station.
Playa de Aiguadolç
South of the town, next to the Aiguadolç marina. Fine sand, very clean water and less crowded than la Ribera. The surroundings are more residential and the atmosphere calmer.
Best for: families, weekday visits, anyone wanting more space. Getting there: 15 minutes' walk from the centre, or a 5-minute taxi ride.
Playa del Home Mort — nudist and gay-friendly
The best-known nudist beach in Sitges, with a section particularly popular with the LGBTQ+ community. It sits between Sitges and Vilanova i la Geltrú in a more natural setting. No facilities (no showers, no beach bar) — come prepared.
Best for: nudism, gay-friendly atmosphere, peace and quiet. Getting there: 30–40 minutes on foot from Sitges along the coastal path, or take a taxi to the vicinity. Note: no Blue Flag here due to its natural character — the water quality is perfectly fine.
Playa de Terramar
South of town, in front of the old Hotel Terramar. Coarser sand, less crowded and well loved by locals who want to escape the tourist concentration around la Ribera.
Best for: high-season days when la Ribera is packed, a local-feeling experience, quiet.
Playa de Garraf — for a day trip
Technically this is Garraf, a district of Sitges municipality, but it's 10 minutes away by train. A cove between cliffs with far lower capacity, crystal-clear water and a classic chiringuito.
Best for: escaping Barcelona heat, snorkelling, spectacular views. Getting there: R2 Sud train to Garraf station — departs from Sants and also stops at Sitges.

Season and conditions

Blue Flag status (water quality and facilities) is typically held by la Ribera, Sant Sebastià and Aiguadolç.
Getting there by train
From Barcelona, the R2 Sud train reaches Sitges in 40 minutes from Sants. Sitges station is a 10-minute walk from la Ribera. No traffic, no parking stress — the most practical option for getting from Barcelona to Sitges in summer.
