Surfing in Sitges: Complete Guide to Waves & Lessons
Where to surf in Sitges: Aiguadolç beach, lessons from €15, and SUP on calm waters. The complete guide to surfing near Barcelona.
Sitges is not Hawaii, but Aiguadolç beach hides some of the best waves on the Catalan coast. Just 37 km from Barcelona, this town combines a relaxed atmosphere with solid conditions for surfing, SUP, and windsurfing almost year-round.
Why Surf in Sitges
The Mediterranean can't compete with the Atlantic in wave power, but Sitges delivers surprisingly good surf. The Sitges Surf Club turned Aiguadolç beach into a hub for water sports enthusiasts, with lessons starting at €15. Waves are gentle and perfect for beginners. In autumn, Mediterranean storms generate more powerful and consistent swells that can challenge experienced surfers too.
Best Surf Spots in Sitges
Aiguadolç Beach — The most popular and accessible spot. Just 145 metres long next to the marina, it offers soft waves ideal for beginners and surf school lessons. Changing rooms and showers nearby.
Botigues Beach — A few minutes south, this quieter stretch attracts intermediate surfers looking for faster, more powerful waves. Less crowded than central Sitges beaches.
El Cementerio — The locals' best-kept secret. Long, hollow right-handers on the right swell. Best for experienced surfers; check Surfline before heading out.
Beyond wave surfing, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) is hugely popular in Sitges. The typically calm, sheltered waters are ideal for beginners. Nootka Kayak & SUP runs sunrise SUP sessions from the beach — highly recommended. Escola Catalana de Surf also operates in Sitges with groups of up to 15 students per 2-hour session.

Best Time to Surf in Sitges
The Mediterranean is inconsistent — it can go weeks without waves. Two clear windows:
Autumn (September–November) is prime surf season. Mediterranean storms generate stronger swells and water temperature stays pleasant (18–22°C). Fewer tourists too.
Spring (March–May) also offers good conditions with rising temperatures. Summer is usually too calm for wave surfing, though SUP and windsurfing are enjoyable year-round.
