Things to do in Sitges: practical guide by type of traveller
What to see and do in Sitges: old town, beaches, food scene, Carnival, nightlife and museums. Itineraries for a day trip, a weekend or a longer stay.
Sitges packs beaches, a historic old town, gastronomy and nightlife into less than three square kilometres. You can do it as a day trip from Barcelona, but people who arrive planning one night tend to stay two. Here's everything worth doing, organised by how much time you have.
If you only have one day
The classic sequence that works for almost everyone:
Morning — Catch an early train (R2 Sud from Sants, 40 min). Breakfast on a terrace in the centre. Walk through the historic old town: the church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla perched on the cliff, Carrer Major, the Plaça del Cap de la Vila.
Midday — Playa de la Ribera or Sant Sebastià. In June–September, arrive before 11am to find space. The chiringuitos on the Passeig de la Ribera are perfect for lunch facing the sea.
Afternoon — Stroll along the Passeig de la Ribera to the harbour. If you're visiting during the Tapa a Tapa route (late April, early May), this is the moment to work your way through the local restaurants tapa by tapa.
Evening — Dinner in the old town and, if you have energy left, a first stop in the bar zone around Carrer del Pecat before the last train back.
Last train: check times at rodalies.gencat.cat — there are usually trains until well past midnight.
If you have a weekend
Two days lets you do everything above at a slower pace, plus an extra layer:
Saturday: beach in the morning, old town in the afternoon, dinner and nightlife.
Sunday: visit the museums — the Museu Cau Ferrat (Santiago Rusiñol's home and studio, the Modernista artist who made Sitges an artistic capital) and the Museu Maricel are the most interesting. Open in the mornings. Then walk to Aiguadolç beach for a quieter end to the trip before heading back.
Optional excursion: train to Garraf (10 minutes), a spectacular cove between cliffs with far fewer people.
For food lovers
Sitges has a serious food scene for a town of 30,000 people:
- Vermouth — The Sunday vermouth tradition is alive and well. Bars in the centre open from noon.
- Tapas — If you're here during the Tapa a Tapa route, it's the best way to try local restaurants at a fixed price (~€4 tapa + drink).
- Fish and seafood — Restaurants near the harbour serve fresh catches from the local market. Suquet de peix and arròs a banda are the most local dishes.
- Municipal market — Open in the mornings. Worth a stop if you're looking for local produce.

For culture lovers
- Museu Cau Ferrat — Rusiñol's studio-home, with works by El Greco, Picasso and Rusiñol. Probably the most interesting museum in town.
- Museu Maricel — Medieval and Modernista art with sea views.
- Modernista architecture — Sitges has one of the highest concentrations of Modernista architecture in Catalonia outside Barcelona. Walking the centre is itself a cultural visit.
- Festival de Cinema Fantàstic — Every October, Sitges becomes the world capital of genre cinema. If you're here for it, it's unmissable.
For partygoers
Sitges has nightlife that punches well above its size. The main strip is Carrer del Pecat and surrounding streets, with bars and clubs that don't close until dawn in high season.
The peak of the year is Sitges Carnival — one of the most famous in Europe, with parades, floats and a full week of celebration in February. Hotel rooms sell out months in advance.
