Sitges in March: Spring Without Crowds
Sitges in March: 17°C, empty beaches and Easter processions. The best month to visit without tourist crowds.
March marks the awakening of Sitges. Temperatures rise to 13-17°C, the days lengthen and the village regains its Mediterranean character before the summer tourists arrive. It's the month of perfect transition: neither the cold of winter nor the overcrowding of summer. Just Sitges at its most authentic.
Why March Is Ideal for Visiting Sitges
March combines three advantages that are hard to find in the same month: good weather, reasonable prices and peace and quiet. With 6 hours of sunshine per day and temperatures that can exceed 17°C on the warmest days, strolling along the Passeig de la Ribera or the old town is a pleasure without the crushing summer heat. The beaches are empty but beautiful — the Mediterranean is still cold (~14°C) for swimming, but the shoreline is perfect for long walks at dawn or dusk.
The Camí de Ronda, the coastal path from Sitges towards Garraf and Castelldefels, is especially enjoyable in March: the late-winter sea has an intense blue colour, the Garraf cliffs show their full dimension and the path is practically deserted. The round trip is about 6 km from the centre of Sitges.
Prices in March are intermediate: higher than January and February (the Easter holidays and the St Joseph's Day bank holiday boost demand) but well below summer levels. It's the ideal month for those seeking a balance between experience and budget.
Easter in Sitges: Processions and Tradition
Holy Week (variable date, may fall in March or April) is one of the most solemn and photogenic times of year in Sitges. Processions wind through the streets of the old town with floats, brotherhoods and the sound of drums at dusk. The Good Friday night procession, with hooded penitents carrying candles through medieval alleyways, is an image few Spanish towns can match.
Unlike Carnival, Easter in Sitges is not mass tourism — it's a living village tradition that draws visitors from the region but without the stampedes of big cities. You can watch the processions comfortably and up close.
Practical tip: if Easter falls in March, hotels fill up and prices rise. Book 4-6 weeks in advance if you plan to visit during those dates.
What to Do in Sitges in March
Beyond Easter, March offers a full agenda:
- Cycling: the inland Garraf roads are very popular with cyclists in spring. Bike hire in the centre from ~€15/day.
- Hiking in Parc del Garraf: 10 minutes by bike from the centre, the natural park has routes from 5 to 20 km through pine forests and cliffs.
- St Joseph's Day (19 March): bank holiday in Catalonia = very popular long weekend for escapes from Barcelona.
- Craft market: Sundays at Mercat Municipal with local products from the Garraf area.
- Cultural visit: the trio of museums (Cau Ferrat + Maricel + Romàntic) at their best — no crowds and full staff attention.
- Penedès winery tour: the D.O. Penedès is 20-30 minutes by car. March is excellent for visiting wineries like Torres or Freixenet before the high tourist season.

Weather in March
March in Sitges: highs of 13-17°C, lows of 8-10°C. Late in the month the warmest days can reach 18-20°C. The sea is 14°C — warming up but still cold for swimming. Rainfall is occasional (~35-40mm/month) and generally doesn't last more than a day at a time. March light on the Mediterranean has a special clarity that photographers know well.
